TORONTO

So another day in Toronto, and another touristy (and FREE!) outing at The Distillery Historic District downtown. Too bad it was so cold, but we stuck it out. My daughter hated me for it and I was plagued with a constant “Are you done yet? Are we leaving soon?”

Note: once again, I opted to over edit photos just a bit because……well, just because.

THE DISTILLERY HISTORIC DISTRICT
The Distillery Historic District
55 Mill Street, Toronto, ON

I won’t drone on too much about this area – you’ll find the link above that has a map and explains everything better than I possibly could!

This relatively “new” historic area was opened in in the spring of 2003. Built in 1859 - this qualifies as historic in Toronto – it’s a few small blocks of buildings that used to house the Gooderham & Worts Distilleries. For 160 years, this place pumped out old fashioned whiskey all over the world until it shut down in the 1990s. The area’s rebirth has been dedicated to promoting arts, culture and entertainment and this now landmark district attracts artists from all over the art spectrum, theatres, restos, cafes and boutiques. It has something for everyone – historic buildings for history buffs, art shops for those who like art, "general stores" for those who like knick-knacky stuff, delicious food for the foodies, and in the summer, all kinds of concerts. Some forty-plus buildings constitute the largest and best preserved collection of Victorian Industrial Architecture in North America. It’s Toronto’s first pedestrian “village” and the city’s only Historic District.

A “no franchise” policy keeps the Starbucks, the McDonalds and other blights of commercial regularity from suffocating the commerce, keeping the area lively and eclectic. The brick-lined streets and the European style piazzas have made this now one of my favorite spots in Toronto.
