If you missed The First 12 Hours, click here...If not....read on, or just enjoy the pics - not many get to see Venice without the never-ending crowds of people bustling about.
We are out the door at 4:00 AM and start walking around the Canneregio district, to the Rialto Bridge. Sure enough, I think we saw maybe 5 people during this walk.....and perhaps the same amount of large-ish rats (yes, no typo there - there are large New York looking-rats roaming around Venice at this time!). From Rialto, we continue on to Piazza San Marco and Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace).
What a difference it is to see Venice like this!
4:32 AM - Chiesa di San Geremia, an elegant, 1700s Romanesque church in Campo San Geremia
4:35 AM - At the bottom of Ponte dell Guglie looking down Fondementa Labia
4:46 AM - Rio de la Maddalena
4:57 AM - Standing on some bridge... somewhere in Venice
5:08 AM - Rialto Bridge
5:11 AM - Again, not sure where we are - but it's somewhere along the Grand Canal
5:14 AM - Gondolas docked for the night
5:20 AM - Window shopping for masquerade masks
5:27 AM - Piazza San Marco without a soul in sight!
5:29 AM - When do you ever see Piazza San Marco empty?
5:32 AM - Calle Salvadago in front of Hotel Cavalletto
5:37 AM - I wish everyone could experience Piazza San Marco like this!
5:40 AM - During the day you really don't get to appreciate the details and the beauty
5:41 AM - Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace) before the crowds swoop in
So...... thankful to get out of the cold, we hop on, convinced that the change over in Punta Sabbioni would be fairly short. We arrive in Punta Sabbioni (situated on the west coast of Cavallino-Treporti, Italy) about 45 minutes later and get off and ask when the next 12 vaporetto is coming. Guess what? Seems the schedule is not set in stone and very chillaxed on a Sunday morning.....so we are stuck here for the next 1.5 hours.
Ah well.......we tried to make the most of it, but there truly is nothing to see here! We walked along the dock.....walked back, and when a resto finally opened around 7:30 AM, when most people were ordering a coffee.....it was wine that I needed to calm down a bit.
7:06 AM - Watching the sun wake up in Punta Sabbioni on the west coast of Cavallino-Treporti
7:10 AM - While we ended up here by accident, still tried to make the most of it until the next ferry
7:11 AM - Nothing to do in Punta Sabbioni but stroll along the water and take pics
8:01 AM - Snow-capped mountains off in the distance
8:02 AM - A birdie posing for us as we're waiting for the vaporetto to Burano
8:36 AM - Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello, viewed from a vaporetto on the Venetian Lagoon
Still pissed I didn't get here earlier, but happy that the island is still pretty empty - the hoards of tourists have not infiltrated the quaint streets yet (yes....I am fully aware that I am one of those tourists!).
The colourful houses...the bridges..the canals....are a feast for the eyes. You won't find the same colour side by side, and it seems like the whole spectrum of the rainbow is represented here. The story goes that the houses were painted so brightly to help fishermen recognize their houses when they came back after a long fishing day. Currently, any resident on the island that wants to repaint their house, needs to consult with city officials that will give them a selection of colours permitted for that spot.
8:38 AM - Arriving in Burano on Fondamenta dei Squeri - almost 2 hours later from when we wanted to
8:40 AM - Surprised to see a 9/11 square in teeny tiny Burano
8:41 AM - Alone on Calle dei Saladi
8:42 AM - Curtains for privacy when the door is open for air
8:42 AM - Out of the maze of houses, we come out onto beautiful Fondamenta San Mauro
8:43 AM - Ahhh....the colours!
8:44 AM - Everything is so colourful and charming that it almost looks like a movie set
8:47 AM - Fondamenta di Cavanella
8:48 AM - Lost track of where we are in Burano, but just enjoying walking...
8:48 AM - No two houses in row are ever the same colour
8:49 AM - Shades of pink
8:50 AM - Looking down Fondamenta di Cao Moleca where this canal leads out to the Venetian Lagoon
8:50 AM - Poor Jeremie, always stuck having to wait for me cuz I'm too busy snapping away
8:54 AM - The sun shining on Fondamenta della Guidecca
8:54 AM - Can't get over the prettiness of everything
8:54 AM - Someone is too tall for most of the doorways in Burano
8:55 AM - The views......wow....
8:56 AM - The colours....the doors....the shutters.....I love all of it!
8:56 AM - Two men out for their morning paper run - Rio Terrà del Pizzo
8:57 AM - Via Baldassarre Galuppi
8:58 AM - Chiesa di San Martino with it's Leaning Bell Tower
8:59 AM - Dudes setting up for some sort of market
9:00 AM - Strolling through San Martino square
9:01 AM - Houses on Riva dei Santi
9:02 AM - Notice the "Riservato" docking sign
9:02 AM - Everyone takes pride in the way they decorate the exterior of their houses here
9:04 AM - You can better see the "lean" on the Leaning Bell Tower from here - Fondamenta di Terranova
9:05 AM - Still on Fondamenta di Terranova
9:06 AM - Someone's getting their fish nets ready for the day
9:07 AM - Time to make our way passed this guy and try to catch the next vaporetto
9:19 AM - Seems we have 15 minutes to kill, so let's see where this bridge leads to
9:20 AM - You can see Venice from this bridge which locals call Ponte Longo
9:22 AM - Seems I'm suddenly on another island Isola Mazzorbo and have stumbled into a vineyard
9:25 AM - Time to head back over the bridge to Burano
9:26 AM - How did I not notice this statue at the dock when we arrived?
10:32 AM - The vaporetto drops us back in Venice at Fondamente Nove
10:33 AM - Snapping away at every canal we cross over rushing back to the hotel to make our 11 AM check out
10:41 AM - Another canal somewhere in Venice
10:41 AM - And another....
10:42 AM - And yet another.....
11:25 AM - This spot by the hotel looks way different now than at 4:30 AM!
11:25 AM - I think this gives a better idea of all the tourists that have crammed into the city
11:28 AM - If I tried this, I'd be in the water for sure
11:31 AM - Making our way to Piazzale Roma but stopping to snap Rio Novo
11:38 AM - Under the Ponte della Costituzione
11:40 AM - Last view of the Grand Canal - CIAO VENEZIA!!! Until next time!
