UNTERWASSER: The Shining

STILL ON DAY 14....OF 19 I know some of y’all skip the reading and just check out the photos, but trust me, this one’s storey cannot be told in pictures.
Not wanting to stay in Liechtenstein (those prices in Swiss Francs are just too much for my liking), we Hotwire-ed a hotel and ended up 30 minutes west of Liechtenstein. Driving through the Alps to get there I must admit we were a bit concerned when the GPS told us to turn onto to a small mountain road and continue for 24 km! All we passed were empty green valleys, with teeny-tiny houses sparsely spread out……
My hubs keeps saying, “Babe, where the hell is this hotel? What kind of shack did you book us in?”
And I’m like, “Even though it was Hotwire-ed, it looked like a nice, big, beautiful hotel!”
We finally get to it, Hotel Sternen in Unterwasser, and it is a nice, big, beautiful hotel…..but, here’s where “The Shining” comes into play – it’s practically empty. There’s close to 1000 rooms and there are 3 rooms occupied (including us) in the entire place.
There’s no one at reception, a sign tells us to call a number from the phone on the counter, and dude says he’ll be there in 10 minutes.
Dude shows up, and he is extremely friendly and pleasant, yet there’s this undoubtedly Shining-esque vibe that he’s giving off. Like he’s been all alone and typing up sheets of paper with “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” He asks us what we want for dinner since it’s included, then sends us off to our room.
We check out the totally empty hotel and room…..we’ve left the bags in the car, just in case the twins show up or there’s redrum written on the walls and we need to make a quick escape.
We decide to stay since it’s about dinner time, grab the bags, snap some photos outside (it is amazingly beautiful out there) and talk to the Jack Nicholson-y manager again. Seems this place is popping in the winter because it’s a ski resort…..in the summer, no one comes here.
So we eat, dinner is actually quite good, cooked by the manager and perhaps one other person somewhere in the kitchen. Oh yes, and the manager was quite pleased to point out to us that the only other 2 people in the restaurant are the ambulance guys, so if anything should happen, we should feel safe because they’ll take care of us. W.T.F.??? We were almost ready to run. After dinner, we walk the town which took a total of 5 minutes, then hit the bed for the night.
Morning comes, we eat and hit road to head for Lucerne. We drive about 10 minutes and I notice that the road is covered in sh*t – literally – we come around another curve and the procession of cows confirms this (photos below). We’re stopped completely. Blocked by cows. Cows that are taking sh*ts right in front of our car. After looking it up on my trusty phone (since I’m stuck behind sh*tting cows) it seems we’re caught in DÉSALPE – a traditional mountain festival where after more than four months of grazing in the high alpine pastures, the cows make their way down to the plain. Along the way, people are letting out their sheeps and goats and joining the procession. We finally make it by this and we’re off to Lucerne.
