ROMA - GIORNO 2

Second day in Rome. What is there to do? We've already seen the must-see sites yesterday in one afternoon, except for the Vatican. That's the great thing about this city. You don't really need to be doing anything. Just being there is enough.......It's hard to describe the sheer grandeur and splendeur - history just oozes out of every pore of Rome. Historic stuff aside, the most amazing part of Rome is just getting lost walking around the small streets, narrow alleyways and looking up to see everyday life: people talking from balconies, hanging laundry, growing plants.....The architecture, the people, the fine wines, the mouthwatering cuisine - La Citta Eterna exudes a magic and charm that is pretty darn hard to duplicate!

YOU'VE GOTTA SEE......

THE VATICAN
You can't go to Rome without a stop at The Vatican. I've done the museums and the chapel and all that on a previous visit, but I knew that there's no way that girls would last going through the amount of rooms and exhibits at the Vatican Museums. I won't go into any descriptions about it, because, well...it's the Vatican. I do have one piece of advice - for anyone wanting to go in to the museums and the Sistine Chapel, buy your tickets in advance online for a specific time window and enter through the museum entrance on the side. All tourists always ending wasting up to 2 hours lining up in St. Peter's Square in the hot sun when you can easily bypass this!

CASTEL SANT'ANGELO
Castel Sant'Angelo is one of my favorite sites in Rome. Just a few minutes walk from the Vatican, along the Tiber River, its been used as a fortress, prison, palace and I think home to a pope or two. This is another that I never go into because I'm completely content admiring from the outside. Though I'm told that the view from the top is amazing and worth the visit.

PIAZZA DEL POPOLO
From here, we walk across the river and zig-zag through the streets to the massive Piazza del Popolo. Resembling the shape of St. Peter's Square (which neither are square-shaped at all), this piazza, in the shape of a perfect circle has a 36-metre high Egyptian obelisk in the middle,  twin Baroque churches at the far end, Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto and at the other end are the Porta del Popolo and the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo. Crossing the massive piazza, we climb up Pincio Hill to the Pincio Gardens that border the Villa Borghese Gardens. Undoubtedly, this is the best spot to see the entire city - the view is definitely worth the climb!

BORGHESE GARDENS
The gardens are massive. I mean MASSIVE. Walking it in the heat is unbearable, so thank goodness you can rent bikes, segways and even golf carts by the hour so you can see as much of the gardens as possible. We went the bike route - 4 euros for an hour, 7 euro for 2 hours. The last time I rode a bike....was 2 years ago in this same spot, so naturally, the girls had a blast laughing at my adjustment time. I don't know the name of everything in the gardens, but it's just plain old fun to pedal your way around and stop for photos every now and then.

SUNSET
From the gardens, we ended up in the same spots as yesterday......Spanish Steps, Trevi, Pantheon...and of course we had to have gelato. Sunset approaching, I made the girls climb back up the Spanish Steps and walk a bit further away from the tourists, and sit for over an hour to watch the colors changing over Rome. This spot, as well as Pincio Hill are my fave's for watching the sunset.

Giorno 3 coming soon!
