WINERIES: Route des vins au Québec

Domaine les Bromes

So, I must admit, I feel like a bit of a douche, living in Montreal (well Brossard) for 7 years, and not knowing about the Route des vins. What an unbelievably beautiful region! Who knew?!? It honestly felt like a different country. Thank goodness they drive you the entire way, because after the first winery, you’re definitely already slightly tipsy.

THE TOUR......

Booked through Kava Tours, it’s a full-day tour, with a relatively small group of people and a bilingual tour guide (Eric was awesome!). You feel a little bit spoiled as you’re picked up from a pre-determined downtown area, and then receive the royal treatment as you’re driven to three different wineries and welcomed by the vineyard owners.

DOMAINE LES BROMES

First stop is Domaine les Bromes. About an hour’s drive from Montreal, this gorgeous vineyard has approximately 44 acres of land, gently sloping towards towards Lac-Brome. We are welcomed by Anne-Marie, who guides us through the intricacies of the wine-making process, starting with a short walk to see the vineyards to taste some Baco noir grapes (a hybrid red grape), then a peak in the back room where the fermenting takes place, and lastly, not only a tasting, but a guide on how to properly taste wine. We’ve all done the sniff and swirl, sniff again, but now…….I get the why and so much more!

UNION LIBRE CIDRE ET VIN

Next stop is Union Libre, a vineyard in Dunham, specializing in Cidre de feu (fire-cider). Since it’s about mid-day at this point, we are greeted by one of the owners, Anouschka, and have sort of a picnic lunch outside. After lunch, we head inside to watch a short video about the making of fire-cider, then have a tasting of 3 different types, along with a tasting of chocolate to go with each. First is the Cidre de feu (Fire Cider), paired with a dark chocolate. Next, we try a Cidre de glace (Ice Cider), complemented by a dark chocolate with sea salt and rosemary. Last but not least, is a Cidre de feu fortifié (Fortified Fire Cider), that is basically the fire cider but with apple brandy added in, paired with a salted-caramel filled dark chocolate.

VINGNOBLE DE LA BAUGE

Last vineyard of the day, is Vignoble de la Bauge in Brigham. Welcomed with an aperitif, then, drinks in hand, we hop on the tractor wagon for somewhat of a hayride to a beautiful terrasse in the middle of the vineyard. Here, there’s even more tastings! This one is a “multi-sensory” tasting, where first we taste 2 wines that look like rosés, and we have to pick which one is the real rosé. Then we listen to 7 snippets of different music and identify which style of music we think of while drinking the wine, and the last is to feel a few fabric swatches, again to identify which one “feels” like the wine. As if we haven’t had enough to drink, we head back to the main building to taste even more red and white wines that are offered with a few appetizers.
