GIBBY'S MONTREAL

One of my fave steakhouses in Montreal, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are on open on Christmas day. Since my birthday is on Christmas day, I pretty much never get to go out to restaurant for a nice dinner, well because....my birthday is on Christmas day. The atmosphere at Gibby's is charming, clean, comfortable, rustic and authentic with an interesting history. This place was converted from a horse stable that dates back two hundred years.

OK, so it is not cheap, but no great steakhouse is. I've tried all the best steakhouses in Montreal and this is the one I always come back to. The bread is amazing, and it comes with butter, pickles and bacon. OMG......the BACON. I try to hold myself back every time I go, but, it's bacon. And they just keep bringing you more and more of this wonderfully fatty bacon.

Anyhoo, after the bacon, and the salad (which we dump more bacon on) my hubs and I have our menu down to science by now - no need to look at the menu, we always take the same thing and pick at each others plates.

YOU'VE GOTTA EAT THE......

SEAFOOD CRÊPE CARDINAL
We always start with Gibby's Seafood Crêpe Cardinal (Crêpe aux fruits de mer Cardinal), which is full of savory chunks of lobster, shrimp and scallop, served with a rich creamy cognac sauce and topped with mussels. The seafood is always perfectly cooked, which gets big points because we all know how tough those bits get when overdone. My hubs and I shared one order, which consisted of eight full spoons of creamy goodness. We certainly could have shared a second order, though that is more a reflection on the otherworldly taste than the portion size.

SORBET
Between your starter and main course, they always serve a small lime sorbet to cleanse your palate. A tradition at Gibby's to eliminate lingering flavors from your appetizer so you can enjoy your main course properly.

SURLONGE EN CROÛTE
For the main course, we always get this and the Wellington and split it to get the best of both worlds. What could possibly be better than a sirloin steak cooked to a perfect medium-rare on the grill? A medium-rare sirloin steak encrusted with a medley of Dijon mustard, seasoned bread crumbs and black peppercorns - that's what. The meat itself is positively succulent, and the crust is utterly divine - I mean, fit for the gods themselves - it is that good.

BEEF WELLINGTON FILET MIGNON
Oh. My. God. This was on-point tonight. This choice cut is covered with mushrooms duxelle, wrapped in puff pastry and served with Bordelaise sauce. There are not enough words to describe how good this is - delicious, tender, juicy, tasty, mouth-watering, scrumptious, blissful, savory, flavorful, lip-smacking, better-than-sex - none of these words do it the justice it deserves.

MONTE CARLO POTATO
Double baked with bacon (yes more bacon!), sour cream and chives. I never knew a potato could be this good. Baked once, then the inside of the potato is scooped out, mixed with milk, butter, cheese, chives, bacon and a few other usual suspects before being spooned back into the skin, sprinkled with paprika and popped back in to the oven to be baked for a second time. A bacon-buttery pleasure to eat!

KEY LIME PIE
I'm usually a chocolate dessert kind of gal, but needed something more refreshing after a meal like this. First time having the Key Lime Pie here, I was pleasantly surprised - the crust is a nice crumbly graham cracker crust that holds well, the filling is creamy and light, without running and the flavor profile is refreshing, where it's just sweet enough, not too tart - the perfect end to a perfect meal!
