VENICE: For 24 Hours? Why Not! (The First 12 Hours)

That restlessness starts to set in, and you feel easily irritated and slightly depressed and can't quite figure out why....until it pops into your head - "I wonder if there's anywhere I can go on standby for the weekend?"
Venice works. So does Rome....and so does Paris. Immediately I feel better! I have options to feed this addiction and something to keep me sane for just a little longer.
Try as I might to convince the hubby to fly to Venice (from Montreal) for just 24 hours, he's not biting.
"Babe, we JUST got back from vacation. Can't you wait a bit?"
"Hmmm, but it's Venice! Don't you wanna see it before it sinks?"
"It's not going to sink within the next few months...."
"But...but it will just be you and me...no kids...wandering around Venice...."
"You're not going to be happy until you go, aren't you? Go, if you must!"
Yes. I. MUST. Hellooo? Travel keeps me sane!
Must I go alone? Sure, I could. And I truly thought there's no way in hell someone would tag along with me, but just in case, a quick text to another fellow travel addict saying, "Soooo......I'm thinking of going to Venice this weekend for literally only 24 hours...." was all that was needed to get an immediate response of, "Count me in."
Hotwire was my saviour! Was about to give up and Hotwire pulled up a cute 3-star within a 5-min walk o Venice's main train station for only $120 (CAD) for the night. On the island of Venice, this is practically unheard of. Like ever.
READY, SET... GO!
Excuse the slightly long post.......but as you'll see, we managed to cram quite a bit into our limited time in Venezia!
1:51 PM - Checking out the Grand Canal from Ponte della Constituzione
1:52 PM - Though it was dull and grey when we got there - it's still a sight to see!
1:52 PM - So pretty....and not at all stinky like everyone says
2:05 PM - Taking it all in
2:06 PM - Getting used to all the boats zipping by
2:07 PM - San Simeone Piccolo
2:08 PM - Ahhhh.....My first sighting of a Venetian Gondola!
2:11 PM - As we're getting to the hotel, the sun peeps out and bathes everything in this golden light
2:54 PM - After dropping off our stuff, we're right back out to try to see everything
2:54 PM - Looking at Ponte degli Scalzi from the Ferrovia (Bar Roma) vaporetto stop

3:22 PM - Arriving in Murano
3:23 PM - Beautiful tile work
3:24 PM - Checking out the houses in Murano
3:24 PM - Of course, they would have to have Murano Glass flowers instead of real ones here!
3:25 PM - View of Fondamenta dei Vetrai (left) and Fondamenta Manin (right)
3:26 PM - The colours take your breath away
3:27 PM - Can't stop snapping shots of all the prettiness
3:28 PM - Still snapping away at beautiful Murano, even though I am dying to eat something
3:30 PM - Looking a bit raggedy but gorgeous at the same time

4:36 PM - Walking around Murano a bit
4:36 PM - Checking out if there's any souvenirs worth buying
4:36 PM - Cute, but at the prices they were asking....nope!
4:39 PM - Would have been cool to buy Murano glass in Murano....
4:39 PM - ....but you're better off buying Murano glass anywhere but here
4:48 PM - Goofing around a bit, waiting for the next vaporetto back to Venice
4:50 PM - Heading back to Murano Faro (Lighthouse) for the vaporetto back to Venice
5:05 PM - Enjoying the action in the Venetian Lagoon on the way to Piazza San Marco
5:19 PM - Still on the vaporetto, watching a cruise ship leave the port
Feeling slightly rested, up we go in search of the famous Ponte dell'Academia, then wander through the streets a bit to find a spot to watch the sunset. We end up somewhere around Santa Maria del Rosario and sit by the water looking out over to Guidecca to watch the sun go down.
Legs failing....and eyes at this point, we hop on a vaporetto back to the area around our hotel....grab some pizza for dinner, snap a few night shots of the Grand Canal, then decide to turn in for the night in order to wake up at the ungodly hour 3:30 AM to see Venice without a soul a sight.....Check out the next 12 hours...
5:23 PM - Coming up to our stop at Palazzo Ducale (Doge's Palace)
5:24 PM - The vaporetto has to navigate through traffic first!
5:25 PM - Come on gondolas....outta the way!
