So, leaving beautiful Graz in the morning, we head northwest 278 km (approx. 3 hours driving time) for a stop in Salzburg. The drive is a mix of highways and smaller roads through gorgeous mountain scenery. Not on my hubby’s list of places to visit, but being a Sound of Music addict, how could I not stop in the city of the Von Trapps?!?

I loved the drive, the scenery was amazing (photo below), and we came across a beautiful little town in valley that I cannot remember or find the name of and another gorgeous town, Sankt Gilgen (where Mozart’s mom was from) that had the most insanely blue lake (photo below as well!).

SALZBURG
A few hours are all it takes to fall hopelessly in love with this city. Didn’t expect it to be so packed with tourists (finding parking was painstakingly long). The hustle and bustle of Salzburg’s Old Town is almost tangible – strolling through the Getreidegasse, Salzburg’s famous “shopping mile” – you’re surrounded by both locals and tourists shopping to their hearts content. At the end of the street, you’ll find yourself at the Salzburg Cathedral, from there you can continue on to Mozartplatz, or detour and grab the funicular up to the Hohensalzburg Fortress. We were only there for about 3 hours, but managed to cover all the major points easily – must admit we cheated a little by following a few tourist groups.

YOU'VE GOTTA SEE......

SALZACH RIVER & PROMENADE
Kaipromenade
The lifeline of Salzburg, summertime brings plenty of people to the Salzach river banks to walk along the beautiful tree-lined promenade, cycle (too fast for my liking) along the bike paths or just hang out in the sun.

ALTSTADT (Old Town)
Old Town, Salzburg
The Old Town has a distinct old world charm – everywhere you look there’s beautiful Baroque architecture, hence why Salzburg’s Old Town is one of 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Austria. This is where’s you’ll stumble upon all the major sights – Mozart’s house, Alter Markt, Salzburg Cathedral, etc.

MOZART GEBURTSHAUS & GETREIDEGASSE LANE
Getreidegasse 9, Salzburg, Austria
A narrow pedestrian walkway, lined with shops - good luck squeezing your way through the mobs of people, especially around house number 9 – which turned out to be Mozart’s birthplace. While you’re stuck in the crowds don’t forget to look up at the ornate wrought iron signs and the intricately carved window frames of the tall, narrow buildings.

DOMPLATZ & SALZBURG CATHEDRAL
Salzburg Cathedral, Domplatz, Salzburg, Austria
One of the main squares in the Old Town, the Cathedral Square (Domplatz) is located right below the Hohensalzburg Fortress and bordered by the Salzburg Cathedral, the archiepiscopal Residence and St. Peter’s Monastery.  The center monument is a statue of the Virgin Mary – Mariensäule, built by the Hagenauer brothers in 1771. The figures sculpted on the base represent wisdom, the church, angels and the devil. It’s technically free to get inside the church, but there’s peeps standing at the door asking for donations – most give a few loose euros.

HOHENSALZBURG FORTRESS
Mönchsberg 34, 5020 Salzburg
To get up there, you have the choice of walking or taking the Festunsbhan (funicular). If my hubby had is way, he would had us hike up there, but honestly already had my fair share hiking up to chateaux and schlosses on this trip. Cost is about 12 € for funicular and an self-guided audio tour once you’re at the top. The fortress was home to the Archbishops of Salzburg for centuries and is one of the main attractions, both for the museum inside and for the amazing views of the city and Untersberg Mountain.

MOZARTPLATZ
5020 Salzburg
Not far from the cathedral, you can’t miss it because it has a huge, beautiful statue of Mozart standing in the middle of the square. Um, that’s pretty much all there is to this square!

NONNBERG ABBEY
Nonnberggasse 2, 5020 Salzburg
One of the locations from the Sound of Music, fun to see up close and sing/hum the whole time “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” – fun for me, not for anyone who was unfortunate enough to be within earshot of me.
