Kapellbrücke - Chapel BridgeKapellbrücke - Chapel Bridge

Day 15 ….of 19. After making our way through the whole cow debacle, which I guess we were quite lucky to see (minus all the sh*t all over the roads), we drive almost 2 hours west and make it to lovely Lucerne, Switzerland.

Again we’ve Hotwire-ed a hotel end up with a cute place in the Old Town by the water….the Magic Hotel – where the rooms have no numbers, but are named by the theme of the room décor. We were in “Angel”.

YOU'VE GOTTA SEE.......

ALTSTADT (Old Town)
Don’t be afraid to just be a tourist and wander about. It’s a pedestrian zone, so you can take your time and meander through the narrow cobblestone streets and beautiful squares and plazas. Remember to look up and admire the many frescoed buildings and gorgeous wrought iron signs hanging high above the shop entrances

KAPELLPLATZ & FRITSCHI FOUNTAIN
The Old Town is chuck full of beautiful squares and fountains, like the Kapellplatz with unique Fritschi Fountain standing in the centre.

KAPELLBRUCKE (Chapel Bridge)
For sure the most iconic representation of Lucerne, the bridge spans 670 feet diagonally over the Reuss River. Wasserturm is the name of the massive stone tower that was added to the bridge in the late 14th century – first used as a prison tower, then as a watch tower and finally a treasury. The original bridge (built in 1333) was destroyed in the 90s and painfully reconstructed shortly after that.

HOFKIRCHE LUZERN
Located in the northern area of the city, just across the Seebrucke, the tall twin spires of the Hofkirche can be seen overlooking the lake. The interior of the Hofkirche is quite impressive, especially the Death of the Virgin’s altar and the Soul’s altar, both decorated in ornate gold leaf and the carved wooden pulpit located halfway up the central aisle created by Niklaus Geissler.

LOWENDENKMAL (The Lion of Lucerne)
The first thing that struck me about the Lion Monument in Lucerne is the size of it. From pictures that I had seen I had expected a much smaller sculpture but the Lion is insanely large (it measures 6 metres high and 10 metres across). The 'Dying Lion of Lucerne' is a monument to the fallen Swiss soldiers at the battle of Tuileries, Paris in 1792 when French Revolutionaries attacked the palace. The monument was erected in 1820 and was sculpted out of solid granite rock in the side of a natural cliff of rock just to the north Lake Lucerne.

MUSEGGMAUER (City Walls)
The Museggmauer is an original section of the old city walls, ramparts and towers of the old town of Lucerne. The wall dates back from 1386 and consists of nine towers. Each of the towers have their own distinct design and construction and visitors can enter some of the towers for awesome panoramic views of the city, lake and mountains. The central tower (Zyt) contains the oldest clock in Lucerne and you can see the inner workings of the clock as you climb the steep wooden stairs to the top. The clock is set to chime one minute before any of the other clocks in the city.
